Application Process: Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. To volunteer with pediatric patients, you must be at least 18 years old. You will need to provide a valid social security number on your volunteer application. A time commitment of three to four hours per week on the same day and at the same time is required for six consecutive months. Volunteers applying now should be available to begin their service at UCSF Medical Center within four weeks. You will need to complete the required online coursework, which will take about five to six hours. Completion of the online coursework does not guarantee placement in our volunteer program. All volunteers must attend a group interview. You must pass a mandatory background check to volunteer. In addition, you will need to provide proof of the following immunizations: Negative Tuberculin (TB) Tests: Two negative TB skin tests are required, one within the past year and another within the past three months, or one negative QuantiFERON blood test and one negative TB skin test within the past three months. If you have a positive TB skin test, you must have received a negative chest X-ray report within the past year, as well as provide documentation of the positive TB skin test result. Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): Proof of two vaccinations or positive blood titer. Chicken Pox (Varicella): Proof of two vaccinations or positive blood titer. Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis or Whooping Cough (Tdap): You must document that you received this vaccination after 2005, when pertussis or whooping cough was added. Flu Vaccine: Required during the flu season. You may obtain the flu shot through your own healthcare provider or free of charge through UCSF Occupational Health.
