Volunteer Information: Volunteering at San Leandro Hospital operates through the San Leandro Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary. Since the Auxiliary’s inception in 1972, members have donated more than one-half million hours of service, and some volunteers have been with the Auxiliary from the start. Over the years, through Gift Shop proceeds, the Auxiliary also has awarded more than $400,000 to students pursuing health care careers. Past scholarship recipients have gone on to become physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. One even became the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer.. Application Process: Step 1: Before You Apply - Please review available positions first. We require a four-hour per week commitment for a minimum of one year. Step 2: Submit Application - Volunteer applications can be picked up and returned at the San Leandro Hospital information desk. Step 3: Interviews - Once your application is reviewed we will contact you to set up an interview within a week or two. Step 4: Orientation - If you are accepted into San Leandro Auxiliary, you will be invited to one of our New Volunteer Orientations. Orientations are approximately four hours long, and cover both hospital and Volunteer Department policies and procedures and other important information. Step 5: Health Screening - After orientation you will make a health screening appointment with Employee Health. You must bring the following documentation to your Health Screening Appointment: Documentation of two-step tuberculosis skin test (TST) performed elsewhere. One can be within the previous 12 months; the second test must have been within the past three months. AHS can provide the second TST, if needed. For anyone with a documented history of a positive TST, a chest X-ray done within the last 12 months will be required. A chest X-ray may be obtained at your primary care provider's office. Proof of immunity either by immunization records, and or titer(s)-blood test, must be provided for Measles (rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella (chicken pox). Those with records of Hepatitis B vaccine and Tetanus, Diphtheria, Adacel Pertussis (Tdap) should bring copies to be filed. Influenza vaccine is mandatory for all volunteers during flu season (Nov. 1-March 31.) Step 6: Background Investigation - Volunteers are required to go through a criminal background screening after the Health Screening is completed. Step 7: Now you can get your badge and start your training!
