Volunteer Information: Each year more than 500 compassionate individuals from our community volunteer more than 90,000 hours in 100+ different areas of the hospital. Our volunteers provide special services to our patients and families that contribute daily to our mission to create hope and build healthier futures. . Volunteer Programs: Adult Volunteer Program; Junior Volunteer Program
Volunteer Placements/Services: Escorting patients to hospital appointments; Playing with patients in waiting rooms; Assisting in hospital playrooms and sometimes at the bedside (will require additional training); Reading to children (will require additional training)
Application Process: Applicants must be willing to conduct a personal interview with Volunteer Resources staff as well as complete all necessary hospital competency tests. Junior Program applicants must be accompanied by a parent/guardian during the personal interview. Competency tests address the following: Working/interacting with hospitalized patients; Adherence to Confidentiality Policy; Fire safety. A health clearance is necessary before you begin working with patients. It includes: Written documentation of a minimum of two vaccinations for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) received as a child in individuals born after 1957, or one MMR given after the age of 17; Verbal knowledge of having had chicken pox; A two-step TB skin test screening for tuberculosis. This may mean up to four visits to the Employee Health Services Department, or, in skin test-positive individuals, a written report of chest x-ray results taken within the previous year; Drug and alcohol screening. You will be required to adhere to specific policies regarding volunteer work attire. You will also need to purchase and wear a uniform at a personal cost of $15.
